Inspired by Love: A Mixed Media Card Using Timeless Love Creative Cards | Featuring Brutus Monroe

There’s something so inspiring about starting a project with a single piece of artwork and letting it guide the rest of the creative process. For this card, I used one of the Timeless Love Creative Cards from Brutus Monroe as my jumping-off point and recreated its romantic, textured feel using mixed media techniques and supplies from my stash.

This project is all about layering—color, texture, and detail—while still letting the original creative card shine as the focal point.

Project Overview

This card combines spray inks, texture paste, distressed edges, and typewriter-style sentiment stamping to create a richly layered mixed media background. By building my own background first and then layering the Timeless Love creative card on top, I was able to personalize the design while staying true to the inspiration piece.

How This Card Came Together

I began by creating a custom background on watercolor cardstock, working on the textured side to enhance the overall dimension. Using sprays from my stash, I applied a tan pigment ink spray toward the top of the panel, a shimmery pink spray through the center, and a red dye ink spray along the bottom. I worked in a few layers of each color, allowing them to overlap and blend naturally for added depth.

Once the panel was completely dry, I used a palette knife to spread crackle paste across the surface. This step added incredible texture and gave the background that perfectly imperfect mixed media feel.

For the sentiment, I reached for a leftover scrap from my spray session. I stamped the phrase “I love you” using Brutus Monroe Raven ink and the My Type freebie stamp set (available last month on qualifying orders). After fussy cutting the sentiment, I loved how the typewriter-style font added contrast against the organic, textured background.

Next, I prepared the Timeless Love creative card panel by distressing the edges with a paper distresser. To emphasize the worn edges even more, I ink blended red ink around the perimeter, which helped tie the panel into the background colors while adding extra visual interest.

To finish the card, I adhered the creative card panel to the center of my mixed media background. I then popped the sentiment up with foam tape and placed it in the lower right corner of the creative card so it would stand out while still feeling cohesive with the design.

Final Thoughts

This card was such a fun reminder of how versatile creative cards can be. By using them as inspiration rather than a finished piece, you can stretch your supplies and create something completely unique while still honoring the original artwork.

If you enjoy mixed media, texture, and turning inspiration into your own creative spin, this is a technique I highly recommend trying with supplies you already have in your stash.

Thanks for stopping by! Happy crafting :)
